Teradata offers the most complete cloud analytics and data platform for AI. By delivering harmonized data and trusted AI, “we enable more confident decision-making, unlocking faster innovation, and drive the impactful business results organizations need most,” said Ahazi Dismukes, Teradata’s Corporate Facilities Operations Lead.

One of Teradata’s priorities is reducing energy use and carbon emissions, partly through modernizing equipment at its facilities. This initiative is something Dismukes and the rest of the corporate real estate team keep in mind as they support the operations of Teradata’s headquarters in San Diego.

Teradata’s facilities team noticed that the natural gas hot water heaters that support food service and the fitness center in two of the campus’s four buildings were approaching the end of their life cycle. While exploring other opportunities to reduce energy consumption, Dismukes learned about equipment rebates available to San Diego Gas & Electric® (SDG&E) commercial customers, including those for heat pump water heaters.

Reducing energy usage, one project at a time

Ongoing maintenance and management of aging equipment can be a big financial burden for businesses, Teradata included. “Each day presents new challenges in balancing planned and unplanned maintenance, sustainability efforts, and overall operational logistics,” Dismukes said. “And one of our greatest challenges in energy efficiency is rising maintenance costs.” Dismukes reached out to the program to learn if it could support a planned project to improve the efficiency of Teradata’s HVAC system, however the conversation quickly turned toward other opportunities, such as heat pump water heaters.

The water heaters in Teradata’s headquarters were dependable due to regular preventative maintenance, but they were older, less efficient models. “We managed to prolong the lifespan of the old heaters—which came with added costs and the continued anticipation of equipment failure,” Dismukes said. These increased operational costs, as well as Teradata’s corporate goal to become better eco-stewards, led to Dismukes’s decision to replace these aging water heaters with heat pump water heaters.

Heat pump water heaters improve energy efficiency without sacrificing performance

Teradata decided to replace their older gas-powered water heaters with heat pump alternatives. Minimizing natural gas consumption to support Teradata’s sustainability goals was as much of a focus as reducing energy usage as a whole, making Teradata’s water heater upgrade a win-win. “The new equipment operates with great efficiency, and we have seen no increase in electrical consumption,” Dismukes said.

Teradata’s maintenance team can focus on other projects and priorities now that they aren’t spending time keeping old water heaters operational. The heat pumps also provide moderate cooling to mechanical rooms, an added benefit that reduces HVAC usage and energy costs.

While Dismukes and his team ultimately approved the project because of its energy-saving potential, the fact that that the program’s rebates completely covered the cost of the upgrade was an added benefit. “After learning that the cost would be nonexistent, our decision was simple,” he said.

Our team makes upgrading to energy-saving equipment easier

Dismukes worked closely with the program team to understand what steps he needed to take to qualify for program rebates. “The team made the process practically turnkey and very easy for us to execute,” he said. “They are knowledgeable and can help improve your energy efforts and overall sustainability goals.”
